Rules and terms of use
These are short because they are the same rules the catalogue holds itself to.
Terms of use for cards and pictures
A full licence for cards and pictures is being written. Until it is published, these are the terms you use them under:
- No bottle images. A card carries none, and you must not add a bottle image to a card as though it came from us. Your own product photographs on your own page are yours.
- No prices. A card carries none, and you must not present a price as coming from us. Prices on your page come from your own data.
- No Fragrantica links. A card never contains one, and you must not add one to anything you show from a card.
- No label on descriptions. Show the words with no "source:" line and no website's or shop's name. See below.
- Pictures stay unaltered. Show each ingredient picture as it is, from the address in the card. See below.
- Stored copies only as the stored-copy rule allows: 24 hours fresh, up to
7 days when we error or your allowance is out, dropped at once on
in_reviewornot_found. See Limits and caching.
If what you want to do is not covered here, ask us first at sniff@sniffopotamus.com.
Descriptions carry no label
Show description.text as plain words. Do not add a line such as "from the
brand", "source: …", a website's name or a shop's name above, beside or under
it. The card does not carry one, and your page must not add one.
Where each fact came from is kept in our database, where it belongs, and is not part of the card at all, and neither are the basis words that used to sit on notes, perfumers, families and links between perfumes. See The card answer for each field.
If you only want the brand's own words on your page, show the description only
when brandWords is true. If you rewrite or shorten a description for your
own page, that is your text on your page: do not present it as coming from us
or from the brand.
A Fragrantica link is never published
The card never hands out a Fragrantica address, and you must not add one next to a card.
What is held back is not shown
A perfume held back while it is checked answers in_review and gives you none
of its data. Do not work around that by holding an older copy and showing it
anyway: when we answer in_review or not_found, drop your stored copy at
once. A perfume is usually held back because something in it was found to be
wrong.
Ingredient pictures
The pictures are served from a public address on purpose, so you may show them directly, with no key. The rules:
- Show them unaltered. No recolouring, no cutting out the background, no text, marks or other pictures laid over them. Showing them at the size your layout needs is fine.
- Show them from the address in the card; do not copy them to your own storage. If a picture is corrected or withdrawn, your page gets the correction too.
- They are pictures of ingredients, not of any product. Do not present them as photographs of a perfume or its bottle.
The pictures have a plain white background. On a coloured page, place each one on a white tile rather than changing the picture.
Keys stay on your server
Your key is a password for your business's allowance. Keep it in a server-side
secret: an environment variable on your server that is not exposed to the
browser (on Vercel, not prefixed NEXT_PUBLIC_), or a secret in your edge
function settings.
Never put it in:
- a browser, a single-page app, or a mobile app bundle
- a Shopify theme, a storefront script, or a tag manager
- a repository, a log, a support ticket or a chat message
- a command line, where it lands in your shell history (load it with
read -rs SNIFF_PARTNER_KEYinstead)
The door sends no CORS headers, so a browser cannot call it even if it tried. That is deliberate: your key can never travel to a shopper's device.
If a key leaks, stop it at once and make a new one; see Getting started. Only the business's owner can do that today; if the owner cannot be reached, email us and we will stop the key.
Drafts never leave
Ingredient descriptions and pictures are drafted, then approved by a person. A card only ever carries the approved version, and that is enforced in code. You will never receive an unreviewed ingredient description.
If we get something wrong
Tell us at sniff@sniffopotamus.com with the fragrance id and what is wrong. A correction goes through the same checks as everything else in the catalogue. Once it is published, the next time you refresh your stored copy you get it.
